We're Sponsored!

It's time to break out the champagne. Team Rocknrolla has officially got their first sponsor! Our team will be receiving 7 markers for tournament and training use, and we'll be helping out at the sponsor booth during the World Cup Asia 2009.

We'll reveal who our sponsor is when we've got the green light, so stay tuned.

Hurrah!

First Fitness Training Session - Bukit Gasing

Team Rocknrolla (well, most of it) had their first fitness training session today. At the suggestion of coach Shamsher Opherden, we met up at Raju's at Bukit Gasing, and made our way over to the park nearby.

We hiked up and down the (super-steep) hill, waded through jungly areas, sashayed over a suspension bridge, and sweated like icebergs in Africa.

It was fun. By the end of the trip we looked somewhat like sweaty zombies. Jimmy gasped and wheezed and "caught breaths" most of the way up, but received a mysterious spurt of energy as soon as civilization loomed ahead.

Either way, it was a good experience. We'll be doing this again next week.

Hopefully Aizat will be able to join us after puasa (fasting) month is over, and Edward will join us next week.

Superstar Coach!

Our coach, Shamsher Opherden, came out in the Star today, one of the largest national newspapers in the country! You can read the online archive of the article here. It also features Greg Tee, another member of team MacDev Ronin.

An excerpt from the article:
“Paintball is a game that doesn’t just use your body but your mind as well. It’s a game that requires quick thinking and moves.” When they are on the ‘battlefield’, the one thing that keeps them going is the adrenaline rush. Shamsher says that once you get addicted to the high from playing paintball, you’ll keep going back for more.

Hell yeah!

Snapshots - MPOC 2009 5th Leg

The Beginning - MPOC 2009 5th Leg

Team Rocknrolla was formed out of a desire to play paintball, and... a desire to play paintball.

Last weekend (15-16 August 2009) we jumped into 5th leg of the MPOC (Malaysian Paintball Official Circuit). We had a grand total of one training session. But well, I don't think we're looking back. We didn't manage a podium finish (We got 7th place), but well, as far as we're concerned, it's all about the experience, and we had a great one.

We learned:
  • Tissue paper is good.
  • Bananas are good.
  • We need more fitness training.
  • We need a better battlecry. "Onz!" will do for now.
  • Always test your markers before you go in, even if the ref says you don't have to. Having 2 markers down at the start of the game will make you want to cry or punch something.
  • We need more fitness training.
  • We need a cooler box. Malaysian tropical weather is brutal.
  • Teamwork is essential. If you're not pulling your share, your team suffers.
  • Make sure everyone preps enough cash to pay for the paint. Otherwise your accounting goes to hell.
  • Did I mention we need more fitness training?
  • Starting from the bottom is good. Everyone's using the same shitty house markers. If you're good, you know it's you, not your swanky gun (This pearl of wisdom came from one of the team. I liked it, therefore it's here.)
  • Playing paintball is bad for your wallet. But we love it anyway.
All said and done, I'm proud of the team. We held it together (mostly), and we came away bruised, battered, and a lot wiser. Our coach (Shamsher Opherden of Team MacDev Ronin) kept us in line, guiding us when we were lost, encouraging us when we started to flag, and keeping us calm when we started to freak. Thank you, coach!

Also, a quick word of thanks to team Bamboo Bullets for helping us with pods, and letting us use that magical cooler box filled with ice.

As of now, the team lineup consists of me (Amber Wong), Sandie Lee, Jimmy Ng, Aizat Feisal Hakim, and Edward de Souza.

Team Rocknrolla
(Front L-R) Amber, Shamsher, Edward
(Back L-R) Sandie, Jimmy, Aizat

We're still trying to figure out our options, training is expensive. We may not have unlimited training funds, or the swankiest equipment, but we've got heart, and we'll get there.

Should you suddenly be overcome with a fit of generosity and decide to support us in any way, we can be contacted at g5paintball@gmail.com.

Next stop, World Cup Asia 2009!

Cheers,
Amber
